Adora Cruises (CSSC Carnival) was founded in October 2015 as a joint venture worth about $4 billion over ten years, between the British-American cruise line Carnival Corporation & plc, the Chinese sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corporation, and the Chinese shipbuilder China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
In November 2018, the contract for the first two Chinese-built ships was formally signed at a cost of about $1.5 billion, and CSSC Carnival announced plans to purchase two ships already in service to enter its fleet beginning in late 2019. However, these plans were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Two ships already in service for Costa Crociere, Costa Atlantica and Costa Mediterranea, were sold to CSSC Carnival.
For a long time, CSSC Carnival was also known as “Carnival China” on many news and maritime websites. In 2023, the company was rebranded as Adora Cruises but is still known as Adora Cruises Carnival China at this time.
