The company traces its history back to the Tsukumo Shokai Shipping company founded by the Tosa clan in 1870, but jumping forward in time about 100 years and after a lot of mergers between shipping companies, the now called Nippon Yusen Kaisha decided to revive its passenger ship business, and in 1988 Crystal Cruises was founded.
Operating two luxurious cruise ships, Crystal was sold to the Genting Hong Kong group in 2015 for US$550 million dollars on a deal that made the news at the time, as it was paid straight forward and in cash. After the deal, Crystal Cruises announced their expansion into the River and Yacht industry and acquired vessels to put those plans in action. On the following years, Crystal also announced the plans to keep building new cruise ships and yachts.
