Hapag-Lloyd Cruises
Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten originally belonged to the Hapag-Lloyd Group. Its predecessor, HAPAG, launched the first “educational and pleasure voyage” on the ship Augusta Victoria in 1891, initiated by then-general manager Albert Ballin, who sought to boost demand during the slower winter season. This voyage generated high interest, marking the birth of the cruise industry. As a nod to its history, the year 1891 remains part of the company’s logo today.
While the brand name Hapag-Lloyd was retained, the cruise division became legally independent. In February 2020, the company was sold and bought by TUI Cruises, part of a 50:50 joint venture with Royal Caribbean International, effectively incorporating Hapag-Lloyd Cruises into the a conglomerate with the TUI Group.
The company primarily targets the German-speaking market, with German as the main language on board, and English on some voyages. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises offers luxury, yacht-like experiences, and expedition cruises, competing mainly with AIDA and Phoenix Reisen.
