Job Description:
The Assistant IT Officer assists with daily system monitoring, ensuring the integrity and availability of hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes. They review system application logs and verify the completion of scheduled tasks such as backups. They support shipboard crew by maintaining workstations, including PCs, POS terminals, cabling systems, servers, and related hardware. The officer responds promptly to support requests during working hours, with extended hours available as needed for critical system support. They notify the IT Officer (or Senior / Systems Manager) of hardware shortages, including PCs, printers, scanners, POS systems, and servers. Provide basic user training and support for software, including specialized property management systems.
The officer monitors and maintains satellite communication systems for optimal performance, assists in monitoring and maintaining the internal telephone system, and reports mechanical failures to the technical team, while also assisting in monitoring and repairs. They perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization. Also to ensure that planned maintenance assigned to their discipline is conducted and reported on time.
Required skills:
Preferred qualifications for the IT professional position include a minimum of five years of experience with large data centers or demanding networks such as those found in hotels, casinos, or resorts. Strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and effective communication abilities are essential, with fluency in English being mandatory and proficiency in additional languages considered advantageous.
The following list outlines the major systems onboard that require advanced proficiency and are considered basic requirements: DELL PowerEdge VRTX series, iDRAC, VMware vSphere, Microsoft Windows Server 2016/Exchange 2016, Fidelio CruiseSPMS, MMS, Speedcast C.Band and KU band Internet, VoIP Satellite services, Starlink Internet services, VisionLine, VingVision, MicrosPOS, Veeam Backup & Replication, Barracuda Mail archiver, Aruba HPPoE network switches, VHF/UHF Radios, Seamobile, Sailor GMDDS, Alcatel PABX Telephone Systems, Apple OSX and Android systems for tablets (utilized by many onboard departments for day-to-day operations), HP printers.
Besides experience with all listed software and equipment on the job basic requirements, having the Cisco CNAA certification is mandatory for all major cruise lines. Any other certificate or graduation on any technological field related to IT and Networks is also strongly recommended.
Recommended skills:
Preferably, candidates should hold a degree in Information Technology, Engineering, or other related technical fields. Just the base graduation isn’t enough to apply for this role as we highly recommended certifications aligned with the career goals. Valid to mention that some companies also filter candidates with GMDSS operator certificates or other per-specified requirements.
Although not required, having these certifications greatly improves a candidate’s likelihood of landing a job in any company or even getting promoted on board.
