Job Description:

The Light Technician is responsible for the safe and proper operation of the lighting and special effects systems in the main theater during all shows and activities, including full-cast production shows, magic shows, variety shows, Welcome Aboard Show, Game Shows, lounge talks/presentations, and more. They are also responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, and ensuring the proper functioning of all conventional stage lighting, as well as intelligent moving fixtures installed in various venues around the ship, such as the main theater, aft lounge, Lido open deck, the night club, teen clubs, and main atrium.

Required skills:

The ideal candidate should possess a strong understanding of electrical theory, with the ability to interpret and apply electrical and system drawings and diagrams effectively. They should also demonstrate proficiency in operating and maintaining intelligent moving fixtures, including knowledge of repair procedures. Additionally, familiarity with lighting console operation, such as GrandMA, GrandMA2 and GrandMA3, and ETC, is essential, along with a solid grasp of show control and time code distribution. Basic knowledge of lighting design and programming, as well as PC hardware and software maintenance, is also required.

Previous theater experience is advantageous, as the role involves working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with the ability to multitask and make quick judgment calls. Candidates must be comfortable working at heights up to 10.5m (35ft) and possess physical fitness to safely climb ladders and operate necessary equipment. Excellent English verbal skills are crucial for effective communication in show-running environments, and a good understanding of English language structure and grammar is necessary. Finally, candidates should exhibit a friendly, professional demeanor, self-motivation, and a willingness to learn, along with overall good health and the ability to lift or move up to 22kg (50 pounds).

The Light Technician’s role encompasses various responsibilities, including operating the main theater lighting and laser systems, atmospheric effects, and pyrotechnics for all shows and activities as required. They are tasked with maintaining, repairing, and ensuring the upkeep of all lighting systems onboard, including fixture cleaning, lamp replacement, and system inspections. Additionally, they oversee the maintenance of laser, fog, and haze systems, ensuring their proper functioning. The technician is also responsible for the safe handling and firing of pyrotechnic materials during shows, adhering strictly to company policies and safety protocols. Show load-ins and load-outs, as well as the operation of show-related video equipment and projection systems, fall under their purview. Moreover, they train and supervise spotlight operators during shows, ensuring smooth coordination of tasks. Any unsafe operation of pyrotechnic systems is subject to review, with potential disciplinary action, including termination of employment.

Recommended skills:

Preferably, candidates should hold a degree in Electrics, Electronics, Lights Technology, or other technical fields. Highly recommended certifications aligned with career goals: Harman Core, Bandit Lites fixture maintenance, GrandMA2 and/or GrandMA3, Vectorworks Training Online, Laser Safety Officer Training certifications.

Although not required, having these certifications greatly improves a candidate’s likelihood of landing a job in any company or even getting promoted on board.
