Job Description:
The Automation Technician assumes the role of operating the automated stage rigging system in the main theater, overseeing up to 32 axes of automation for various shows and activities. This includes full-cast production shows, magic shows, variety shows, welcome aboard shows, game shows, lounge talks, presentations, and more. Additionally, they are tasked with the cleaning and maintenance of drops, as well as providing assistance to the Floor Technician in maintaining and repairing scenery and props as needed.
Required skills:
An Associate Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience of at least one year is required for this position. Candidates should also possess a theater background and familiarity with industry terms, standards, rules, regulations, and common practices. The ability to work under pressure, multitask, and make quick judgment calls is essential, along with basic knowledge of PC hardware and software maintenance and repair. Basic rigging knowledge is necessary to inspect and identify issues and hazards, although rigging maintenance and repairs are typically handled by contracted companies. Candidates must be comfortable working at heights and able to safely operate electric hoists for various scenery pieces. They should also be adaptable to a dynamic “review-house” environment with different shows happening in the same theater throughout the cruise. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate excellent English verbal skills for effective communication in show-running environments, along with proficiency in the structure and content of the English language. Good overall health and physical condition are required, and candidates must be capable of lifting/moving up to 22kg (50 pounds). Finally, candidates should be able to safely climb A-frame ladders and operate Aerial Work Platforms (AWP).
The Automation Technician is responsible for various activities, including performing show load-ins and load-outs with the rest of the tech team for each show. They conduct rig checks before each show, following a pre-show checklist procedure, which includes power cycling control cabinets, verifying calibration and position of all automated units, and running cue-by-cue sequences on an empty stage. Additionally, they perform a dry-run of the show, loading in, setting up, and performing pre-show checklists of sets, props, and applications. Communicate outstanding problems related to the computer or mechanical rigging system and promptly notifies supervisors of any faults or malfunctions that could jeopardize safety.
During shows, they safely operate all automated equipment as per provided cue sheets and under clearance from the Backstage Technician, ensuring visual checks and monitoring surveillance camera feeds for added safety measures. Any negligent or unsafe operation of automated rigging systems is subject to review, with potential disciplinary action, including termination of employment.

Preferably, candidates should hold a degree in Electrics, Electronics or other technical fields. Highly recommended certifications aligned with career goals: Basic Rigging and Inspection, basic troubleshooting skills, Industrial Safety & Troubleshooting, schematics reading, uses of multi-meters, AC-DC Drives, ITI Advanced Rigging & Fall Protection, OSHA10 and/or OSHA30.
Although not required, having these certifications greatly improves a candidate’s likelihood of landing a job in any company or even getting promoted on board.
