Job Description:
The Broadcast Technician is responsible for acquiring, compressing, digitizing, duplicating, editing, and storing audio and video data for onboard production. They also target and acquire satellite reception for broadcast television systems and set up and operate audio/video equipment, including microphones, sound speakers, compact and professional shoulder cameras, video screens, projectors, monitors, recording equipment, connecting cables and wires. Maintenance and troubleshooting, and fixing related equipment, as well as in-cabin television troubleshooting are daily tasks.
If necessary, the Broadcast Technician must also be capable of performing the duties of an Audio/LES Technician during production shows, live comedies, live bands, weddings, receptions, and other special events.
The position of “Video Technician” or “Videographer” should not be confused with that of a “Broadcast Technician“, as their roles differ significantly. Video Technicians and Videographer primarily handle recordings and operate cameras, with minimal to no maintenance responsibilities. It’s worth noting that some companies may hire both Broadcast, Video Technicians and Videographers for distinct purposes.
Required skills:
Fluent English with background formation related to technology fields. Required expertise includes comprehensive knowledge of signal flow, satellite antennas, remote signal acquisition from various sources, and daily event capture and editing. Proficiency in server ingest of content and scheduling of diverse systems such as IMAX projectors, Allin Interactive System, Xcontrol, Screen Management, and CASTUS, among others, is essential for seamless ship operations. Strong proficiency in computer operations and networks is a must, along with the ability to maintain and repair various video systems, including in-cabin interactive equipment and overall knowledge of systems from brands like NEC, Barco, Samsung, LG, Blackmagic, Adtec, Extron and similar.
Candidates should be capable of safely climbing an A-frame ladder and operating an AWP at different heights up to 10 meters (32 feet). Good overall health and physical condition are necessary, as the role involves lifting or moving equipment weighing up to 30kg (65 pounds).
Recommended skills:
Preferably, candidates should hold a degree in Electrics, Electronics, Video Production, A/V Technology, or other technical fields. Highly recommended certifications aligned with career goals: Harman Core, AV Technology Installation, AVIXA Networking, AV Math, Sea Tel Series 97/00/07 TXRX & TVRO Antenna Systems, AMX Design and Installation. Additionally, having experience with TRICASTER, Blackmagic ATEM or other similar mixers is advantageous.
Although not required, having these certifications greatly improves a candidate’s likelihood of landing a job in any company or even getting promoted on board.
