Job Description:

The Sports Staff are responsible for ensuring that all guests get the opportunity to take part in some of the most thrilling recreational activities on board, as part of an energetic and dynamic team who facilitate active sports sessions, oversee the operation of outdoor recreational activities as well as engage guests in fun and dynamic themed parties. You’re expected to be in good shape as you’ll be taking care of slides and water slides, zip lines, rock walls, simulators, and sometimes videogames.

This position only exists on major cruise lines that offer extra activities for their guests, as Royal Caribbean International being responsible for 80% of all hiring, followed by other family-oriented cruise lines like Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Required skills:

The role requires a solid background in physical fitness and/or recreational sports instruction, with at least one to two years of experience in resorts, sports facilities, or similar recreational environments. Candidates must possess a strong understanding of sports activities and their respective rules, including basketball, volleyball, golf, ping-pong, and shuffleboard. Experience in coordinating and instructing group activities or individual sessions is essential, as well as the ability to provide one-on-one rock climbing wall instruction.

Certification in CPR and First Aid is mandatory, along with the ability to maintain safety guidelines and sports equipment. Applicants should be comfortable standing outside for extended periods in any weather, able to work both independently and in a team, and be 21 years of age or older.

Recommended skills:

Preferred candidates will have a background in outdoor recreation and a passion for coaching and motivating guests. Experience with rock climbing (manual belay certification) is highly desirable. A strong understanding of outdoor and group sports leadership, along with microphone experience, would be advantageous. The ideal candidate should be fearless in high-altitude activities and able to inspire guests while ensuring their safety and enjoyment. The ability to adapt to various environments and the confidence to work both alone and within a team is also key to success in this role.
